Roundup: Girls hoopsters find hot hand

A 40-point first half catapulted Peabody’s girls basketball squad (1-0) to a dominant taming of the Beverly Panthers Friday. In a 67-24 final, the Tanners were led by Olivia Gaynor’s 22 points and five steals, as well as Sophia Coburn’s 13 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks.

Beverly’s high-powered offense poured it on against the Tanners (0-1), who were led by Thad Broughton Jr. (12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists), Jeremiah Agbonavbare (10 points, 3 rebounds), and Dom Domenici (7 points).

BOYS HOCKEY

Beverly 7
Peabody-Saugus-Swampscott 3

The Panthers were led by captain Logan Bowen, who scored four goals and added an assist. Peabody-Saugus-Swampscott tied the game 1-1 in the second period on a goal from Matvey Stupnikov, who later added a second. Jason Kelley scored on a power play from John Morello to make it 4-3, but Beverly scored three more goals in the final 2:58 of the third period to secure the win.

WRESTLING

St. John’s Prep 40
Milford 27

St. John’s Prep defeated Milford Saturday. Winning matches for the Eagles were Colin Vitale, James Lally, Will Lavallee, Luke Calder, Charlie Poor, Sam Josey, Bryant Mason, and Jaxson Tammaro.

Glen Doherty Memorial Tournament

The Saugus-Peabody wrestling team finished second in the Glen Doherty Memorial Tournament with 179.5 points. Melrose won the tournament with 183.5 points.
