Record-breaking ways continue in Meet of Champions

February 25, 2025 by Anne Marie Tobin

BOSTON — Three school records, a meet record, and three automatic qualifiers – not a bad day for the Peabody boys and girls track teams.

Saturday, the boys team tallied 36 points and finished fifth in the MIAA Meet of Champions at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.

“What a great way for Tanner track and field to finish the 2024-2025 indoor Massachusetts circuit,” said Coach Fernando Braz. “It was an outstanding overall team performance with balanced scoring in both the field and oval events. The opportunity to observe and be a part of the collaboration of coaches and athletes at daily practices is educational and inspirational. There are still things to improve on and we are looking forward to making those corrections while advancing to the New Englands.”

Evan Bedard set a meet and school record in the long jump with a winning leap of 23-01.75. Alex Jackson won the shot put (60-07.75) and weight throw (85-01).

Declan Smith finished fifth in the 1,000-meter run with a school record 2:32.50.

The 4×200 relay team of Henry Sawyer, Bedard, Michael Murphy, and Tyler Rapport finished ninth with a school record 1:32.50, while Brian Stevens, Omar Mishal, Smith, and Mohammed Lhassouani finished 11th in the 4×400 relay (3:30.75).

Areno Saint-Victor finished sixth in the weight throw (56-02.50) and 12th in the shot put (48-08.50).

Bedard (long jump), Jackson (shot put), and Smith (1000 meter) qualified to compete in the New England Championship at the Reggie Lewis Center this Saturday.

On the girls’ side, Makayla Koonezis finished seventh in the high jump (5-02).

Andrew Bertucci turned in St. John’s Prep’s top performance with a second-place effort in the high jump (6-06), while Anthony Ragosa finished seventh in the shot put (50-11.75).
