BOSTON — Senate Assistant Majority Leader Joan B. Lovely, D-Salem, announced that the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has awarded $83,000 in grants to communities in the Second Essex District through the Sustainable Materials Recovery Program (SMRP).
The funding will support designated activities and equipment aimed at enhancing waste reduction and recycling efforts as part of recycling dividends programs. Beverly will receive $18,900, Danvers $13,000, Salem $38,500, and Peabody $12,600.
“This funding will go a long way in supporting waste reduction and recycling efforts in every community,” Lovely said. “Thank you to the Healey-Driscoll administration for prioritizing waste reduction and sustainability in our communities.”
MassDEP’s SMRP provides funding for recycling, composting, reuse, and source reduction initiatives to decrease waste sent to landfills and incinerators. Waste prevention and recycling efforts also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by capturing the energy embodied in products and packaging waste and converting it into new products.
