ROUNDUP: Fenwick girls hoopsters, 2-0, win big against New Mission

December 23, 2024 by Joey Barrett

Most Sundays are for relaxing. For Bishop Fenwick’s girls basketball team, it was time to go to work in matinee action. The Lady Crusaders (2-0) ran over New Mission (Boston) in a 59-19 final. Fenwick’s victory came just days after a 37-32 win against Newton South to open the season. Leading the way were junior captains Caitlin Boyle (20 points, 5 rebounds) and Celia Neilson (17 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists). Seniors Kiley Bloom (8 points) and Caroline Perry (5 steals) also played well, according to head coach Adam DeBaggis. Next up for Fenwick is Silver Lake Regional this Friday. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at Oliver Ames.

BOYS BASKETBALL

La Salle Academy 65
St. John’s Prep 53

Despite a 15-point performance from Michael Miller, who connected four times from downtown, The Prep (0-2) remained winless and La Salle Academy remained perfect (5-0). The Eagles received help from Quinn Stockman (12 points), Brian Norton (9), and Jack Murley (8).

Swampscott 64
Peabody 38

The Big Blue (3-0) played true to their name yet again, defeating Peabody (0-3) in convincing fashion. Swampscott’s Connor Chiarello (23 points, 5 steals) and Teddy O’Neill (9 points, 3 assists) led the way, while CJ Hyer “provided a spark off the bench with eight points,” according to coach Jason Knowles.

Thad Broughton Jr. (13 points) and Mark Mendonca (12 points) led the Tanners, while Noah Crocker, Joe Smith, and Dom Domenici “all played well,” according to coach Thad Broughton Sr.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Swampscott 46
Peabody 43

An 11-point halftime deficit was no problem for Swampscott’s girls basketball team, which upped its record to 2-1 with a 46-43 win in Peabody Friday night. It came with some theatrics, too. Swampscott freshman Anna Kanders hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining in the game. She continued her stellar start to the season with an 18-point performance.

Sam Ward of the Big Blue had four third-quarter triples and finished with 14 points. Olivia Quagrello led the charge on the defensive end with eight steals. It wasn’t all bad for Peabody, which saw strong performances from Aliana Ryan (14 points), Ally Bettencourt (10), and Olivia Gaynor (8).

BOYS HOCKEY

Chicopee 6
Peabody-Saugus-Swampscott 5

In a heartbreaker, the co-op of Peabody-Saugus-Swampscott fell by a goal against host Chicopee. Evan Tybinkowski made 13 saves through nearly two periods before leaving with an injury. Dom Pappalardo made six saves the rest of the way, while Nick Muse (2 goals, assist) and Tyson Higgins (goal, assist) led the offense.

Hingham 3
St. John’s Prep 1

The Eagles were shorthanded for the final four minutes of the game and ran out of time. Hingham scored midway through the third period, then secured the deal with an empty-netter. Kevin Correa scored for The Prep in the second period.
