Peabody TV won big this month at the Alliance of Community Media Northeast Chapter’s annual Nor’easter Awards, bringing home top honors in the Overall Excellence category for productions with a budget of more than $851,000.
The media center was also awarded honors for “Community Media Day 2023 at Peabody TV” in the About Access & Community Media category, “2023 Peabody Public Schools Santa Parade” in the School/Educational Program category, and “Behind the Title: Police Chief Tom Griffin” in the Profile Talk Show category.
Production Manager for Peabody TV and President of the Alliance of Community Media Northeast Region Board Jim Palmer explained the lengthy submission and review process, which started in mid-May and went through the summer.
“All the productions are judged in five areas, on technical quality, on format and production style, audio quality, video quality, and the judges’ overall reactions,” Palmer said.
All projects are judged three times by local Northeasterners, with the exception of the Overall Excellence award, which is viewed by judges from around the country.
In September, the finalists for each award were revealed, but it wasn’t until Dec. 9 that each community found out if they were the one bringing home gold.
It was then that the Peabody TV crew found out they had won the large budget category for Overall Excellence, beating out cities such as Boston and Newton.
Palmer attributes the diversity of programming that Peabody TV offers as what set it apart from the competition.
“There were aspects of all sorts of different programs. There was some music and performance, some community events, city government meetings,” Palmer said. “Well rounded coverage showing that we’re involved in pretty much every aspect of the community.”
