Fenwick runners take on Willard Park

November 12, 2024 by Joey Barrett

Both the boys and girls cross country teams from Bishop Fenwick delivered competitive showings on Saturday. They took part in divisional postseason races at Willard Park in Devens.

The Lady Crusaders qualified for this Saturday’s Meet of Champions after a fifth-place finish (152 points). They were a mere seven points away from a third-place finish.

Leading the way was junior Marianna Kay, who ran her best race of the season that included “a fantastic finish,” according to coach Fred Doyle, to secure fourth place. Sophomore Adelaide Sweatman was Fenwick’s other runner to receive an MIAA medal, finishing in 11th place.

Rounding out the Lady Crusaders’ point-scorers were Olivia Rowe (22nd), Caroline Blatchford (64th), and Julia Davis (65th).

The girls will return to Devens this Saturday to compete in the Division 2 final at 1 p.m.

On the boys’ side, they “ran a very competitive race,” according to Doyle, to secure an 11th-place finish. It put Fenwick in the top half of the 26 teams that competed.

Freshman Chris Kay (38th) led the way for the Crusaders, followed by Doron Appleyard (64th), Sam Appleyard (67th), John Reilly (80th), and Ryan Gauthier (104th) in a field of 190 runners.

All of Fenwick’s male runners will return for another season next fall.

“And this experience will be very important as they chase a berth in the Meet of Champions,” Doyle said.
