In three set scores of 25-20, 25-8, and 25-8, Peabody (10-7) found its rhythm en route to a state tournament-clinching win against Georgetown Friday night. Leading the Tanners were Lizzy Bettencourt (15 kills), Kaylee DiNicola (5 kills, 9 service points), and MacKenzie Landry (9 assists, 15 service points).

North Andover had no answer for the Tanners, who improved to 11-7 Monday. Peabody lost the first set, 22-25, before winning the next three (25-19, 25-23, 25-19). Bettencourt led Peabody with 20 kills. Sophia Coburn and Alyssa Zito “played great at the net,” while DiNicola and Sydney Lynch “played great defensively,” according to Tanners’ coach Sherrill Erickson.

“Captain Elizabeth Moore had a key defensive save in the first (quarter),” said Peabody coach Jillian Tobin. “Amayah Francher pulled two huge defensive saves in the first and fourth.”

Maxwell Parent got things started with a 40-yard rushing touchdown and it was a breeze from there for St. John’s Prep, which scored all of its points through three quarters. Another highlight came through a trick play, with Parent tossing a touchdown pass to Anthony Sanderson to put the Eagles ahead, 16-0, in the opening quarter.
CROSS COUNTRY
Both the boys and the girls teams from Peabody were victorious in a Northeastern Conference showdown against Danvers. The boys won, 15-40, with Logan George claiming first place for the Tanners. Matt McCusker, Aidan Trainor, Mohamed Lhassouani, Osama Mishal, and Jackson Guerriero all finished in the top 10. On the girls’ side, the Tanners won, 23-32. Lauren Foley and Ella Braz finished first and second, respectively, with teammates Lilly Murphy (5th), Maya Sutton (6th), and Marley Lambert (9th) rounding out the top nine.
The Fenwick boys (19-41 final) and girls (17-41 final) cross country teams picked up home-course wins against Arlington Catholic. On Senior Night, The Lady Crusaders (5-1) were paced by the 1-2-3 finish of Adelaide Sweatman (20:16), Marianna Kay (20:30), and Olivia Rowe (21:19). The boys (4-2) also received a 1-2-3 finish, courtesy of Sam Appleyard (18:24), John Reilly (18:55), and Deven Dion (19:13).
GOLF
Masconomet won Thursday’s (Oct. 16) Northeastern Conference Open at Bass Rocks Golf Club with Chieftains Cole Velardo (79) and Brendan Sheehen (72) leading the way. Beverly and Marblehead tied for second place with Tyler Forbes (78) shooting well for the Magicians. Winthrop took fourth, while Mike Collins and Tyler Ostroff (80) guided Swampscott to sixth place. Peabody placed seventh and Saugus tied for eighth.
