Peabody Library offers free tech help and art camps this summer

Wednesday, July 30

CD Fish Craft

10:30-11:30 a.m.

Community Room, South Branch

Make a fish out of an old CD with Miss Betsy! The finished product will make a great window decoration. All materials provided. For children ages 5-12.

Summer Foods for Kids and Teens

11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Courtyard, Main Library

The Peabody Library’s free Summer Eats lunch program is back! Every Monday through Thursday from July 8-Aug. 21, kids and teens aged 1-18 can grab a free lunch in the Main Library Courtyard, and join us for different daily event!

  • Monday: Movie Mondays – Join is INSIDE IN THE TEEN ROOM to watch a movie while you eat your lunch!
  • Tuesdays: Take and Make Tuesdays – grab a craft kit and make it at the Library, or take it home with you!
  • Wednesdays: Waterplay Wednesdays – cool off with our water play toys, water balloons, sprinklers, and more.
  • Thoughtful Thursdays – participate in mindful activities, such as coloring, meditation, or journaling.

Summer Eats is brought to you by the Peabody Public Schools, No Child Goes Hungry in Peabody, Project Bread, and MA DESE.

Registration is not required.

Drop in Tech Help

1 – 2:30 p.m.

Public Computers, Main Library

Join us in the Main Reading Room every at the Peabody Institute Library every Wednesday from 1-2:30 for tech help with: basic computer skills, laptops and computers, tablets, e-readers, smart phones, library databases and apps, word processing software, and more. Come prepared by bringing any devices you want help working with, login or account information you may need, and any specific questions you have. Chromebooks are available to practice on if you can not bring in your own device.

Registration is not required.

Inkwell: Mural Madness Art Camp (Middle School)

1-3:30 p.m.

Creativity Lab, Main Library

Mural Madness: How would you like to brighten up the library with a colorful new mural? Participants design and paint all week, learning about color, composition and why public art matters. Middle and high school artists will work to finish artwork that celebrates Peabody and the spirit of the library. When we’re done, we will gather for a dedication ceremony to honor our work. All materials included. Wear clothes for making art.

The program is free and open to the public, but space is limited and registration is required. Register at peabodylibrary.org.

Teen Book Club

4-5 p.m.

Teen Room, Main Library

The Teen Book Club is BACK! Join us one LAST Wednesday of every month in the Teen Room from 4-5 p.m. to discuss our monthly picks. Copies of books can be checked out at the Public Service Desk at the Main Library, or sent to your preferred library location.

Participants receive 1 hour of community service. Registration is preferred, but not required.

For July, we’ll be reading “The No Girlfriend Rule” by Christen Randall (one of PVMHS’s Summer Reading Books!)

You’re never too young for storytime! Join Miss Meeghan for stories, songs and sensory play that helps babies develop language, social and motor skills.

For parents and caregivers with children aged 18 months-3 years.

Miss Meeghan will guide toddlers and their parents and caregivers through stories, songs and lots of movement that helps build important social and early literacy skills.

TACO Thursday – West Branch

4-5 p.m.

Community Room, West Branch

Earn community service hours by participating in Teen Advisory and Community Organization, or as we like to call it, TACO!

Each Thursday, teens can come to the teen room at the West Branch Library and help better the Peabody Institute Library. Teen volunteers will be given tasks that help the library in some way. As compensation, teens receive one hour of community service hours, and free food the first Thursday of the month.

Please fill out a Teen Volunteer Application at the start of this program if this is your first meeting. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. If you have questions, please email Teen Librarian Amory at AThomas@noblenet.org or call the West Branch Library at 978-535-3354.

West Branch Nonfiction Book Group

6-7 p.m.

Alcove, West Branch

Want to learn more about worldly events? Join us to discuss this month’s nonfiction read! This book group meets on the LAST Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. in the reading alcove of the West Branch Library.

We will be discussing “The People’s Hospital” by Nuila Ricardo and picking up our next book: “The Book at War” by Andrew Pettegree.

Family Lego Fun

Children’s Library, Main Library

The whole family is invited to create some LEGO masterpieces at the Main Library! Come to the Children’s Library and use our LEGO blocks to build something awesome. LEGO isn’t only a super fun way to spend a Saturday morning, but it’s also a great way for children to gain creative and mechanical skills.

Large DUPLO blocks will also be available for younger children.

Preschool Storytime

Preschool age children will have a blast at Miss Patty’s Storytime! Come listen to some stories, dance and sing along with us. These programs help children gain early literacy and social skills while also preparing them for a school environment. Children will receive a take-home craft at the end of the program.

Adult Yoga with Jacqui Orphanos at the West Branch

2-3 p.m.

Community Room, West Branch

Join yoga instructor Jacqui Orphanos for a relaxing all-levels yoga class. This gentle flow class will focus on breathwork, gentle stretching, functional movement and balance. Participants will be encouraged to move at their own pace & modifications will be offered. Class will close with a relaxing savasana with sound bowls, Reiki assists & optional essential oils. Beginners are welcome!

Mats and Yoga Straps will be provided. Participants should wear comfortable, easy to move in clothing & bring a water bottle.

Citizenship Study Group

2-3:30 p.m.

3rd Floor Conference Room, Main Library

This study group will cover the information you need to pass the Civics test, such as American history, how our government works, and the important symbols of our nation. We will also talk about what you’ve learned in class using English to help you pass the oral and written citizenship exams.

The first hour of each class will be covering new material, and the last 30 minutes will be time for answering your questions. All of the study materials will be provided to you.

Children’s Yoga

10-11 a.m.

Ready for some morning movement and relaxation? Miss Katia hosts a fun yoga session for children every Tuesday morning. Wear comfy clothes, bring a yoga mat if you have one, and a water bottle to stay hydrated. Like all of our Library programs, this event is free and open to the public. Non-Peabody residents are welcome.

Toddler Storytime

Join Amy and her puppet animal friends for storytime, which will include books, songs, and movement! This program is open for parents and caregivers with children ages 18 months to 4 years.

Little Groove

10-11:30 a.m.

Community Room, West Branch

Little Groove provides music programming for young children 14 months-4 years of age. Little Groove’s music program is designed to help toddlers and preschoolers learn and interact with music in a live music setting. Children get to enjoy being a part of the musical experience, using their bodies and voices to sing along to catchy songs that help them build important motor, social, cognitive and language skills. They will have fun using real instruments such as maracas and tambourines as well as educational toys such as puppets and scarves.

Adult Yoga with Kristy Yetter

11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Tech Lab, Main Library

Adult beginner-friendly yoga for all levels is back at the Peabody Library! Join instructor Kirsty Yetter for a low-key drop-in yoga class twice a month that is appropriate for all levels, whether you’re a seasoned yoga practitioner or never done yoga before. Kirsty will lead you through exercises that will help you connect your mind with your body and feel refreshed for the rest of the day.

Please register for each class so we have a head count. Yoga mats and bolsters are provided, but feel free to bring your own.

More about our new instructor Kirsty:

Kirsty Yetter is a yoga teacher, artist, and mom. Her Master’s is in Dancer/Movement Therapy, which greatly influences all her work because she believes that movement plays a crucial role in overall health. Kirsty has been practicing yoga for 25 years and incorporates it into her everyday life. Trained in India in 2011, she has now expanded her practice to offer yoga for every body, as well as many different modalities such as prenatal yoga, restorative & yin yoga. She absolutely adores what she does and feels so lucky to get to teach others.

Learn to use Ancestry.com

2-3 p.m.

Public Computers, Main Library

Learn how to use the Ancestry online database to explore your family’s history. A librarian will help you search genealogical records, including census records, birth, death and marriage records. Bring in family names and any locations or dates that you know to start your search. You can continue your Ancestry research at home for free using your library card! Sessions are by appointment only, and registration is required. Register at peabodylibrary.org.

Teen Movie Night

5-7 p.m.

Teen Room, Main Library

Teens are welcome to join us for movie night with popcorn in the Teen Room! Come watch a fantastic movie about battling realistic monsters.
