Local youth to perform in NMYO concerts

May 13, 2025 by For The Weekly News

IPSWICH — Eight local students from Lynn, Lynnfield, Saugus, and Peabody will perform in “An Afternoon of Spring Concerts” presented by the Northeast Massachusetts Youth Orchestras (NMYO) on Sunday, May 18, at 2 and 4 p.m. at the Dolan Performing Arts Center, 130 High St., in Ipswich.

The concerts, free and open to the public, showcase talented young musicians from across the region. Representing the local area are Nathaniel Vega-Yu of Lynn; Grant Gao, Jonas Koyle, and Rachel Lim of Lynnfield; Brielle Barresi and Peter Bourckel of Saugus; and Drew Little and Teagan McDermott of Peabody.

The 2 p.m. performance features the NMYO Prelude String Ensemble, Overture String Ensemble, and Intermezzo Orchestra. At 4 p.m., NMYO’s advanced ensembles — the Select Flute Choir, Wind Ensemble, and Symphony Orchestra — will perform. The program includes both classical and contemporary selections, with works by Beethoven, Dvořák, Van der Roost, Coleridge-Taylor, and more.

For those unable to attend in person, the concerts will be livestreamed on NMYO’s YouTube channel. Visit nmyo.org and click the homepage link to watch the performances live.

NMYO concerts are an opportunity to experience orchestral music in a relaxed setting while supporting the musical growth of young performers. The organization works to ensure its events are accessible to all and provides reasonable accommodations as needed. Contact the NMYO office for assistance.

Sponsors for NMYO’s 2024 season include the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Cape Ann Savings Bank, Coburn Charitable Society, Cummings Properties, Demoulas Foundation, Institution for Savings, Johnson String Instrument–Carriage House Violins, and Avier Flight Training.

Under the direction of Music Director Michael Coelho, NMYO offers exceptional ensemble training, master classes, community outreach concerts, and enrichment opportunities for 150 musicians from more than 40 towns in northeastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.

Auditions for the 2025–26 season will be held June 7. Weekly rehearsals take place in the Topsfield/Boxford area, near I-95 and Route 1. NMYO is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. For more information, visit nmyo.org, email info@nmyo.org, or call 978-309-9833.
