It was a team effort from Peabody’s girls basketball team, which scored a big home win over the Marblehead Magicians. Aliana Ryan led the Tanners with 15 points and eight rebounds. Do-it-all senior Ally Bettencourt had eight points, five assists, and five steals. Sophia Coburn was big on the glass, registering 10 rebounds.
As for Fenwick’s girls, Caitlin Boyle’s 22-point, 10-rebound double-double – to go with four blocks – helped catapult the Lady Crusaders (4-1) against Archbishop Williams on home hardwood. Celia Neilson played a strong game with 11 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, and five steals, while Kyleigh Pidgeon (9 points) and Sienna Mancinelli (5) also contributed.

With Peabody reaching the double-digit mark in steals, the Tanners took advantage and defeated Salem Academy on the road. Leading the way were Jariel Tolentino (19 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals), Thad Broughton Jr. (15 points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals), Mark Mendonca (6 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals), and Jimmy Festa (3 points, 4 rebounds). Joe Smith (3 points) and Stephen Brown also played well, according to Peabody coach Thad Broughton Sr.
“We were able to get some steals and get some transition hoops to get ourselves going,” said Broughton Sr.

The Headers (6-1-1), last season’s Division 3 state champions, had their hands full at Salem State on Saturday. The Peabody-Saugus-Swampscott co-op (3-3) put up a fight with Nick Muse scoring in the third period and Dom Pappalardo making 23 saves, but it wasn’t enough. Marblehead goals came from Kyle Hart, Avin Rodovsky, and London McDonald, while Leo Burdge made eight saves.

The up-and-down Eagles upped their record to 3-3, sending shot after shot toward Malden Catholic’s net. Braeden Hurley, JR Goldstein, Christian Coleman (first varsity goal), Brandon Ward, and Sam Croke all found the back of the net.

Reading’s Jack Filipski slotted the game-winning goal in overtime to silence the St. John’s Prep crowd inside of the Essex Sports Center. The Prep – which scored the game’s first two goals – fell to 2-3 on the young season. Seniors Carson Irving and Ryan DeLucia scored the goals.
