Pop-tabs were collected for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. (Office of Representative Thomas P. Walsh)

Rep. Walsh delivers pop-tabs, supplies to Ronald McDonald House

January 13, 2026 by For The Weekly News

Just before Christmas, Rep. Thomas P. Walsh (D-Peabody) joined the Ronald McDonald House Charities-NE’s Leadership team to contribute pop-tabs and household goods collected by participants from across the North Shore for Walsh’s fourth year of orchestrating the charity drive.

“When I visited, children were decorating gingerbread houses for the holidays. I am overjoyed by the compassion and the attentiveness of the Ronald McDonald House as they provide normalcy for these families,” Walsh said. “For four years now, residents of the North Shore have generously supported families in need by collecting and donating their can tabs and purchasing needed household goods through this drive. If you are still looking to donate your tabs, please reach out, and we can arrange a pickup.”

RMHC-NE CEO Lauren Hoops-Schmieg said, “Rep. Walsh and the Peabody community have been steadfast supporters through their collection of pop tabs and much-needed Wish List items here at the Ronald McDonald House, and we are forever grateful. Pop tabs are small but mighty as collectively they make a tremendous impact on the families who call RMHCNE ‘home’ while their child receives medical care. The money raised from recyclable aluminum tabs are essential to our family-centered care programs and allows us to keep families close to their children being treated in our local hospitals. We have an ongoing Wish List that allows us to provide the comforts of home to our families. Supporters can purchase items and ship them directly to us through our Amazon Wish List.”

The Ronald McDonald House Charities-New England provides lodging and hospitality, home-cooked meals, and family-oriented activities for families from around the world throughout their child receives medical care at local hospitals.

The aluminum pop-tabs collected by Ronald McDonald House Charities are recycled, with the scrap value remitted to the charity and the proceeds used for programming.

Walsh’s annual can-tab and household item collection drive in support of Ronald McDonald House Charities-New England operates every summer. If you have a collection of tabs you are looking to donate, are interested in learning more, or participating, contact Walsh at tpw6@comcast.net. Additional ways to support patients’ families are available on the Ronald McDonald House Charities New England website at https://rmhcne.org/ or by calling 617-398-6458.

Rep Tom Walsh joined families served by Ronald McDonald House Charities at their location in Charlestown. He was hosted by RMHC-NE CEO Lauren Hoops-Schmieg and House Manager Olivia Brooks.
