Weekly roundup: Frank Kelley Invitational a success

September 23, 2025 by Joey Barrett

The Frank Kelley Invitational, held at Wrentham Developmental Center this past weekend, was a success for Bishop Fenwick’s cross country teams.

Marblehead’s Marrietta O’Connell captured first place in the 3,000m senior race, clocking a time of 10:54.12, but second place belonged to Fenwick’s Marianna Kay, who sported a stellar time of 11:08.27.

“She led through halfway, before surrendering the lead to Marblehead’s Marri O’Connell, giving North Shore schools a 1-2 finish,” said Fenwick coach Fred Doyle.

The Lady Crusaders saw more success, starting with Adelaide Sweatman (6th – 3,000m junior – 11:12.96). Olivia Rowe and Caroline Blatchford also impressed.

On the boys’ side, Deven Dion ran the 3,000m freshman race in 11:02.19, while Sam Appleyard (35th) clocked in at 10:38.99 in senior competition.

“Dion showed excellent composure in his first invitational,” Doyle said.

Peabody’s Luke Murphy won the freshman (Large) race in 9:59.11.

CROSS COUNTRY

Earlier in the week, the Peabody and Swampscott boys tied with Anthony Colella of the Big Blue winning overall. The Tanners received strong performances from Murphy, Mohamed Lhassouani, Matt McCusker, Jackson Guerriero, Aiden Trainor, and Osama Mishal.

As for the girls, Peabody defeated Swampscott, but Annabelle Averett of the Big Blue captured first place. The Tanners – who grabbed the next five spots after Averett – were led by Maya Sutton, Lilly Murphy, Marley Lambert, and Avery Marcus.

Also, the Fenwick girls outran St. Mary’s (24-31 final) and Cardinal Spellman (15-50) on their home course in Peabody. Leading the Lady Crusaders were Kay and Sweatman. Also contributing were Rowe, Julia Davis, and Blatchford. On the boys’ side, Appleyard (17:41) led Fenwick in his team’s wins against St. Mary’s (24-32) and Spellman (24-35). Dion, Doron Appleyard, John Reilly, and Chris Kay – returning from surgery – also ran well.

As for St. John’s Prep, the team was taken down, 19-36, by BC High at Franklin Park (5K) in Boston. Top finishers for The Prep were Jack McIntosh (16:49), Leo Seltenrich (16:59), Liam Mahoney (17:02), Hunter Opal (17:12), and Liam Callahan (17:15).

BOYS SOCCER

St. John’s Prep 2
Longmeadow 0

Undefeated: no more. The Prep defeated previously-unbeaten Longmeadow at Glatz Field Saturday. Ryan King scored a pair of first-half goals, assisted by Matt LeBlanc and James Minor.

Minor, Ryan Levis, Gus Nugent, and Andrew Wentzil played strong defense in front of netminder Matt Droggitis, who saved three shots to earn his sixth shutout. Midfielders Finn McCabe and Owen Beeny also played well.

St. John’s Prep 3
Xaverian 0

St. John’s Prep defended home turf against familiar foe Xaverian. Midfielder Mike Hutchinson scored twice, while Minor added a goal on a free kick that found the top corner. JJ Koulalis and Garrison Murphy registered assists.

The Tanners were victorious in their home opener behind goals from Cam Fletcher, Marc Smith, and Jason Decost (PK). Assists were dished out by Decost and Chris Oliveira, while netminder Julio Cambui performed well between the pipes. Also contributing, according to Peabody coach Stan McKeen, were Thad Broughton, Jayden Lopez, Ethan Hartford, and Marshal Simpson.

GIRLS SOCCER

It’s a game of inches. Peabody had an early goal called back and couldn’t convert a penalty kick in the final two minutes of the game.

“Olivia Ball played well for us in net and made some huge saves. Ava Barresi, Marley Loring, and Cara Corriveau played a great game on defense,” said Peabody coach Andrew Douglass. “Zelie Campbell, Emma Wardle, Brielle Broughton, and Victoria Vaz did great in the midfield and created some great scoring chances for us.”

Gloucester 0

Peabody entered the win column with its first victory of the season. Corriveau scored on a penalty kick, while Ball delivered a shutout between the pipes. McKenzie Miller and Leah Ruffing made their varsity debuts and “played extremely well,” said Douglass, who added Wardle was “instrumental in the middle of the field.”

FOOTBALL

Talk about a response. After last week’s tight loss against Marblehead, Fenwick (1-1) bounced back with a Catholic Central League win in enemy territory. Jesse Timson (from Andrew Kiricopoles) and Dylan Patturelli scored first-quarter touchdowns, but Stang struck in the second quarter to cut the lead to 14-6.

Come the second half, however, the Crusaders sealed the deal with rushing touchdowns from Patturelli and Tyler Connolly.

Kiricopoles, a sophomore gunslinger, was 15-for-23 with 250 yards and a touchdown.

St. John’s Prep 47
Central Catholic 21

St. John’s Prep quarterback Christopher Vargas has gained plenty of national attention this season, and it was easy to see why Friday night. His Eagles (3-0) defeated Central Catholic, 47-21, at Glatz Field in Danvers.

In command from beginning to end, the 190-pound, 6-4 gunslinger threw for 287 yards and four touchdowns. The sophomore was 11-for-14 in the first half alone.

Riley Selvais scored a 46-yard touchdown, Maxwell Parent found the promised land, Ethan Stefanovich opened the scoring with a 28-yard catch from Vargas, and Jordan Toribio took one 48 yards to the house.

The Prep’s defense forced three turnovers.

FIELD HOCKEY

Chris Troncoso (assist) and Elizabeth Moore scored two goals apiece in Peabody’s blanking of Dracut. Karley O’Connor also found the back of the net, while Sophia Kassis (4 saves) recorded her second shutout and Amayah Francher secured another defensive save.

“The captains led the offensive effort in today’s game,” said Peabody coach Jillian Tobin. “Freshman Ashley Demuele earned her first assist and played strong in different positions throughout the game.”

Danvers 6

Troncoso played multiple positions and scored Peabody’s lone goal. Francher recorded her first defensive save, while Kassis made 17 saves. Kyla Moroney led Danvers with three goals.

Bishop Stang 2
Bishop Fenwick 1

Fenwick fell in a close one. Sophie Cooke netted the Crusaders’ lone goal.

Behind a versatile offensive attack, Fenwick took care of its opposition with ease. Leading the way were Alex Kohalmi (2 goals, assist), Cooke, Shea Mason, Bella McCormack, Maya Haddock, Shayna Rowen, and Reese Robillard, who tucked her first varsity goal. Sarah Bannister (save) and Ginny Cahill split goaltending duties.
