Weekly roundup: Field hockey squad puts on a show

September 16, 2025 by Joey Barrett

Leading by example as team captain, Chris Troncoso ripped an early hat-trick to guide Peabody’s field hockey team to an 8-0 road win against Malden Monday. Karley O’Connor (4 assists) tallied her first varsity goal. Also contributing were Elizabeth Moore (goal, 2 assists), Kylee Bettencourt (goal, 2 assists), Yashvi Patel (assist), Eva Briggs (goal), and Morgan White (goal).

FIELD HOCKEY

Bishop Feehan 6
Bishop Fenwick 0

With a tough Feehan group in its way, the Crusaders came up short in Attleborough. Mia Millett, Bailey Chalmers, and Sophie Cooke played well in defeat. Sarah Bannister made 13 saves.

Swampscott 5
Peabody 2

Despite goals from Moore and Troncoso, as well as 17 saves from Sophia Kassis, the Tanners met their match against Swampscott.

“Bella Kassis took charge in the backfield tonight, helping hold the score to 1-1 at the half,” said Peabody coach Jillian Tobin.

Bishop Fenwick 4
Arlington Catholic 0

Host Fenwick blanked the opposition behind goals from Shea Mason (2), Alex Kohalmi, and Cooke, who also dished out a pair of assists. Bella McCormack (assist), Bannister (save), and Millett all contributed for the Crusaders.

Marblehead 4
Peabody 1

Peabody dropped a home game against Marblehead, but not without positives. Sophia Kassis (21 saves) played well between the pipes, while Briggs and Bella Kassis added two saves apiece. Kelsey Kennison scored Peabody’s first goal of the season, with an assist coming from White.

“We played people in many different positions and are very proud of our progress as a unit,” Tobin said.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Peabody boys (2-0) escaped Marblehead, 27-29. The Tanners’ top finishers were Mohamed Lhassouani, Matt McCusker, Luke Murphy, Aidan Trainor, and Osama Mishal. Marblehead’s Henrik Adams secured first place with a time of 16:51, outkicking the opposition through the final 200 meters. Will Cruikshank finished third for the Magicians (0-2), while Zach Pike battled through illness to finish fifth. In girls action, Marblehead took down Peabody despite strong performances from Lily Murphy and Maya Sutton of the Tanners.

St. John’s Prep 15
St. John’s Shrewsbury 49

On St. John’s Prep’s home course of Bradley Palmer State Park (5K), the Eagles were led by Jack McIntosh (17:05), Liam Mahoney (17:16), Mateo DeOrio (17:25), Leo Seltenrich (17:28), Liam Callahan (17:38), and Hunter Opal (17:40).

VOLLEYBALL

Marblehead 3
Peabody 0

In set scores of 25-12, 25-23, and 25-7, Marblehead’s volleyball team (4-1) fought off tough Peabody resistance to capture a 3-0 home win Monday. Lila Moniz and Greta Sachs led Marblehead’s offense with 11 kills apiece, while Mari Modrzynska added another 10. Sydney Faris “had a great evening,” according to Magicians’ coach Killeen Miller, with eight aces and 23 digs. Setters Eva Burke (16 assists) and Sydney DaSilva (17) dished out the offense.

Bishop Fenwick 3
Ipswich 0

Fenwick showed off its clutch gene with a tight, three-set (25-21, 25-22, 25-20) taming of the Tigers. The Crusaders were paced by Emme Lubas (22 sets), Kylie Murphy (10 kills, 5 aces), Elizabeth Dumas (15 digs), and Caitlin Boyle (3 blocks, 6 kills).

Peabody 3
Masconomet 1

Lizzy Bettencourt led the charge with 20 kills, and the Tanners took down Masconomet in four sets. Yorna Demiri helped the cause with 15 assists.

BOYS SOCCER

St. John’s Prep 6
Malden Catholic 0

It was a happy outing for St. John’s Prep, which received first varsity goals from Henry Barone, Marcus Obadai, and Devlin Murphy. Ryan King struck twice, while Garrison Murphy added another.

Goalkeepers Matt Droggitis, Padrig Sullivan, and Colin Gray combined to make four saves and the Eagles (3-0-1, 2-0-0 Catholic Conference) picked up their fourth consecutive shutout to begin the season.

Marblehead 3
Peabody 0

Peabody struggled for the first 20 minutes and fell into a 3-0 hole. Playing well for the Tanners were Jayden Lopez, Marshall Simpson, Thad Broughton, and Ethan Hartford.

“But, taking the positive, we played a scoreless second half and played as well as we’ve played all year,” said Peabody coach Stan McKeen. “A positive to build on.”

GOLF

Beverly 53.5
Peabody 18.5

Tristan Joyce, Anthony Modugno, and Ryan Lockhart shot well for the Tanners, who fell to the Panthers at The Meadow at Peabody Golf Course.

Gloucester 54
Peabody 18

Peabody’s Lockhart, George Grace and MacKenzie Campbell contributed three points apiece, but the Tanners were reeled in by the Fishermen.

FOOTBALL

St. John’s Prep 49
Marshfield 8

Twenty-eight first-quarter points usually do the trick. After last week’s last-second win against Springfield Central in a meeting of powerhouses, St. John’s Prep (2-0) cruised this time around. The Eagles, again helmed by coach Brian St. Pierre, have scored 85 points in two games.
