To the editor:
Twenty-four years ago, during the summer of 2001, Peabody bid farewell to Henry “Harry” Eagar, Joe “Snapper” Cronin, and Francis “Mull” Gill. They were quintessential Peabody people who served the city in some capacity for many years. Well known and ubiquitous, their loss was palpable, and their passing signaled, at least to this young writer at the time, that our journey is not endless.
Now, at the age of 64, while incessant letters about retirement and Medicare flood my mailbox daily, this glorious New England summer has delivered another stark reminder of life’s fleeting nature. Following the recent deaths of Fred Murtagh (venerable City Councillor, Liquor Board member, businessman) and Bob Maguire (likewise a longtime revered City Councillor and Police Captain), the passing of Terry Lee (Vietnam veteran, beloved coach, and friend to all) brings to three the number of Peabody titans taken from our fair city. Rest in peace, fellas. We are forever grateful for your commitment and contribution to public service.
