Police Chief appointed to Metro North board

June 18, 2025 by For The Weekly News

The YMCA of Metro North is honored to announce the appointment of Peabody Police Chief Thomas Griffin to its Board of Directors. With more than three decades of distinguished leadership in public safety and community engagement, Chief Griffin brings a wealth of experience that will support and strengthen the Y’s mission to serve children, families, and individuals across the region.

Chief Griffin has led the Peabody Police Department since July 2014. Under his command, the department — comprising 100 sworn officers, reserve officers, civilian dispatchers, animal control officers, administrative staff, and volunteers — has embraced a philosophy of prevention-focused, community-oriented policing to sustain public safety and quality of life.

Throughout his tenure, Chief Griffin has prioritized initiatives that resonate with YMCA values, including the Autism Awareness Program, Silver Alert Program, Cops for Kids with Cancer, and elder affairs outreach. His leadership in the department’s training efforts and dedication to respectful, equitable policing complement the YMCA’s commitment to inclusion, health, and community resilience.

“I feel honored to be asked to be a part of the Y Board of Directors. The YMCA and the police department work collaboratively on a number of projects. This will just be an extension of that. I look forward to working with Kathleen and the Board,” said Chief Griffin.

“Chief Griffin has been a great partner to the YMCA of Metro North in our shared commitment to safety, trust, and community well-being,” said Kathleen Walsh, President and CEO of the YMCA of Metro North. “Whether it’s collaborating on youth outreach, improving emergency response readiness, or supporting our child protection and safety trainings, his leadership is unmatched in the region. We are thrilled to welcome him to the Board and deepen the Y’s partnership with local law enforcement to build safer, healthier communities.”

As a board member, Chief Griffin will contribute to strategic guidance on community safety programming, youth engagement initiatives, and public service partnerships.
