Despite some versatile offense from the St. John’s Prep lacrosse team – six players scored goals Saturday – the Eagles (9-1) met their match for the first time this spring. Staples (Westport, Conn.) came onto Glatz Field and left with a 12-6 victory over the defending Division 1 champions.
Staples scored five first-quarter goals to put pressure on the hosts, who committed early turnovers and never found their offensive rhythm.
There were some positives, however. Will Crawford won 16 of 21 face-offs, while Josh Haarmann, Cam McCarthy, Madden McGowan, Ryan McCarthy, Josh Barton, and Bo Minogue scored goals.
Mattheus DuPlessis made eight saves on 20 shots for the Eagles, who return to action Tuesday when they host undefeated Boston College High at 5:30 p.m. Results were too late to print.
