Former Fenwick teacher/coach Kulevich to be honored in Marblehead

March 11, 2025 by Joey Barrett

MARBLEHEAD — The Marblehead School Committee voted unanimously Thursday in favor of naming the athletic complex at Marblehead High after Alex Kulevich.

Kulevich, 89, arrived at Marblehead High in 1970 as a history teacher and the head football coach. He then became athletic director for more than 20 years.

“The whole thing is unbelievable,” Kulevich said. “I’m overjoyed. People have been so nice and supportive.”

On the football field, Kulevich compiled a 54-52 record and five winning seasons. He’s a member of the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association, Bishop Fenwick, and Marblehead Gridiron halls of fame.

But through 20 years (1970-90) of teaching at the school, education was always his top priority.

“It’s so important. I’ve had some great players and students who have done great things,” Kulevich said. “I’m just happy I’ve gotten to be a part of the student-athletes’ lives.”

The official name of the building, overlooking Piper Field on Humphrey Street, will be the Alexander W. Kulevich, Jr. Athletic Complex.

“I’m looking forward to seeing Marblehead do well – that won’t change,” Kulevich said.
