BOSTON — University of Virginia bound Alex Jackson, already the best shot-putter in the history of the Peabody High boys track program, did something that no other Tanner athlete has done since 1980 – and that something is to win an individual event at the New England Interscholastic Indoor Track and Field Championship.
Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston, Jackson finished first in the shot put with a winning heave of 64-09.25, more than three feet ahead of runner-up Brandon Wolfenden (Pilgrim).
The last Peabody High track star to win an indoor New England title was none other than current Tanners’ head coach Fernando Braz, who won the boys 2-mile and still holds the school record in the event.
Peabody’s Evan Bedard, a Stonehill College commit, finished third in the long jump (23-00.50) and Marblehead’s Jacob Szalewivz ran a personal best 2:30.38 in the 1000 and finished third.
