At Saugus Middle High School on Wednesday, Feb. 5, the Saugus-Peabody-Winthrop wrestling squad kept its undefeated streak alive in a 70-9 rout over Malden-Everett to improve to 18-0. Anna Felicio defeated Salina Shresthra, 20-4, in a technical fall at 106 pounds. Jackson Deleidi polished off Liliana Zin in a 1:16 first-period pin at 126 pounds. Lukas Fondulis followed with a 19-4 technical fall win at 138 pounds. Max LoRusso picked up a 4:55 pin over David Aldana in the 144-pound match and Michael Maraio needed just 1:20 to pin Jack Combriello in the 150-pound match. Isaac Cesco beat the clock with a pin over Angel Cinchilla with just 12 seconds left in the 157-pound match. Justin Bremberg followed with a pin win in 1:32 over Obert Jean Louis in the 165-pound match. Evan Johnson recorded the quickest pin of the day, defeating Joseph Alayane in just 1:12 in the 175-pound match. Jaden Ceac followed with a 3:30 pin win over Chouaib Saidi at 190 pounds.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Bishop Fenwick girls took part in Saturday’s North Sectionals at MIT, placing eighth out of 23 teams. Impressive performances came from Sarah Shann (8th in 1m diving with 397.9 points), Amelia Gallant (6th in 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.27; 2nd in 500 freestyle with a time of 5:15.68), Caroline Blatchford (3rd in 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.88; 3rd in 100 freestyle with a time of 55.07), and Hannah Ryan (8th in 100 freestyle with a time of 56.63; 8th in 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.78). The 200 freestyle relay team of Ryan, Blatchford, Gallant, and Courtney McKenzie placed 11th (1:50.34) to qualify for Division 1 states.

Peabody coach Thad Broughton called it “our most complete offensive game of the season” as his Tanners (9-10) took down the Falcons. Leading the charge were Jariel Tolentino (27 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals), Jimmy Festa (15 points, 11 rebounds), Aneudy Medrano (11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists), Thad Broughton Jr. (10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists), and Mark Mendonca (6 points, 3 rebounds).
“We got contributions from everyone,” Broughton said.

The Tanners fell short on the road after a hard-fought game against Waltham. It was a balanced scoring attack for Peabody with Maia Davis leading the team with seven points. Ally Bettencourt, Avery Bettencourt, Lizzie, Bettencourt, and Sophia Coburn all finished with six points apiece.

The Crusaders dropped to 8-9 on the season after being defeated by Wachusett Monday evening. Celia Neilson led the Crusaders with 20 points, while grabbing six rebounds. Caitlin Boyle finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Peabody showed its heart after trailing by as many as 13 points. Ultimately, however, the Tanners fell by a point on home hardwood last Friday. They were led by Ally Bettencourt (17 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds), Olivia Gaynor (8 points), and Lizzie Bettencourt (8 points).

The Prep made its way to Tate Rink in West Point, New York for a matchup with traditional archrival Catholic Memorial, which escaped with a shutout win after a late empty-netter. Catholic Memorial scored twice in the second period to put pressure on the Eagles.

A rivalry game was underway inside of the Essex Sports Center, but St. John’s Prep made quick work of Xaverian. Ryan DeLucia registered a hat-trick, while netminder AJ Farese picked up a 30-save shutout. The Prep clinched a share of the Catholic Conference title.
