ROUNDUP: Bishop Fenwick hoopsters take down Peabody

In a battle between city rivals, Bishop Fenwick’s boys basketball team protected home court and defeated the Peabody Tanners, 59-45, on Monday. Fenwick led, 27-23, at halftime. Peabody cut the deficit to two points (39-37) going into the fourth quarter, but the Crusaders went on an 8-0 run to take a 47-37 lead late. Damon Mataragas led the Crusaders with 16 points, while Peabody’s Thad Broughton scored a game-high 20 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Malden Catholic 70
St. John’s Prep 53

Despite six points apiece from Ethan Waszkelewicz, Dawagner De Los Santos, and Marcus Magloire, plus another five from Mike Miller, The Prep (1-14) couldn’t find an answer against Malden Catholic.

Gloucester 57
Peabody 48

Peabody (8-8) fought hard on home hardwood, but was reeled in by the Gloucester Fishermen. Leading the Tanners were Jariel Tolentino (19 points), Mark Mendonca (10), Thad Broughton (8), and Stephen Brown (7).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Peabody 39
North Andover 28

In a rematch from earlier this week, Peabody (6-7) found revenge against North Andover behind 11 points and four steals from Aliana Ryan. Also chipping in were Ally Bettencourt (7 points, 9 rebounds), Sophia Coburn (6 points, 10 rebounds), and Lizzie Bettencourt (6 rebounds).

Cathedral 54
Bishop Fenwick 42

Captains Caitlin Boyle (16 points, 9 rebounds) and Celia Neilson (12 points, 5 assists) each reached double-digits, but Fenwick (7-7) fell short against Cathedral. Caroline Perry and Sienna Mancinelli chipped in six points apiece, while Reese Spurchise added four assists and “great defense,” according to Fenwick coach Adam DeBaggis.

BOYS HOCKEY

St. John’s Prep 6
Arlington Catholic 2

Three goals in the first period and another three in the second did the trick for St. John’s Prep, which took down Arlington Catholic on home ice. Goal-scorers were Ryan Finn, JR Goldstein, Chris DiBella, Brennan Waters, Brandon Ward, and Ryan DeLucia.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Peabody-Lynnfield-North Reading 5
Longmeadow 2

Behind two goals apiece from Chloe Gromko and Ava Buckley, PLNR avenged a loss from earlier this season against Longmeadow. Eleni Spack joined the fun with a goal and two assists, while Alexa Pepper also recorded a helper.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Fenwick took part in the Cara Buckwell Memorial Catholic Central League Championships at UMass Dartmouth this past Saturday. The girls placed third behind first-place finishes from Caroline Blatchford (200 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Amelia Gallant (50 freestyle), and Sarah Shann (diving).
