The Saugus-Peabody wrestling team is on a roll. Saturday, the team swept a quad meet at Watertown High, defeating the host Raiders, 60-18, Malden Catholic, 70-0, and Waltham, 56-15.
Seven wrestlers finished the day with perfect 3-0 records, including Saugus High’s Anna Felicio (106), Tucker Landy (113/120), Justin Bremberg (157), and senior captain Max LoRusso (144), as well as Peabody High’s Jackson Deleidi (120), senior captain Michael Maraio (150) and Evan Johnson (175).
Landy, an eighth grader, won his first two matches at 113 pounds, then bumped up to 120 against Watertown to secure his third win.
LoRusso had a dominant performance with two pins and a technical fall to bring his career win total to 97. He likely has a chance to reach the century mark at the team’s quad meet against Pentucket, Worcester Tech and Burlington at Saugus High on Tuesday (too late to print).
Peabody’s Chris Brown (132), Jayden Ceac (190) and Larry Polanco (215) secured their first varsity victories, all against Malden Catholic via pins.
“The team looked good,” said coach Wayne Moda. “I always worry about vacation week when it comes to maintaining weight and having numbers. It was great that we were able to work some new guys into the lineup and have some of our newer wrestlers get some experience in order to build some depth.”
George Bossi Lowell Holiday Tournament
Felicio had a meet to remember at the 57th Annual George Bossi Lowell Holiday Tournament Dec. 20-21 at the Tsongas Center in Lowell. Wrestling in the girls 107-pound weight class, the senior finished runner-up, losing in the final to No. 2 seeded Ava Svistunov (Belmont) in a 13-3 major decision. Felicio raced through the first three rounds, needing less than two minutes combined to pin all three opponents. She needed only nine seconds to pin Andrea Carvalho (Lowell) in the round of 16, then punched her ticket to the quarterfinals with a 29-second pin over Kallie Chandler (Salem, NH), where she defeated Mia Annello (Billerica) with a 29-second pin.
“She is having an amazing season so far,” head coach Wayne Moda said.
On the boys side, Deleidi (120), Justin Bremberg (157) and Antonio Anzalone (285) advanced to the round of 16 before being eliminated from the championship bracket.
Bremberg finished the meet with two wins in the championship bracket, while Deleido, LoRusso, Johnso and Maraio had one win each. Trey Riley (215), Jake Murray (126), Landon Rodriguez (132) and Giovanni Marques (165) also wrestled.
