Chris Timson was a standout point guard at Bishop Fenwick, who graduated in 1999.

ROUNDUP: Timson scores first win with Bishop Fenwick

December 17, 2024 by Joey Barrett, Mark Aboyoun

It was win No. 1 for Bishop Fenwick’s new boys basketball coach, Chris Timson, as his Crusaders took down Salem Academy, 58-41, toward the end of last week. Timson (Fenwick ‘99) took over from former coach Kevin Moran earlier this year. Fenwick was led by Nate Alder (15 points), while Brady Jenkins added 13. Dom Torres had a solid game, pouring in another 12.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Marblehead 55
Bishop Fenwick 53

A single-digit game throughout in the 3rd Annual Zach Markowitz Memorial Basketball Tournament held at Salem Academy Charter School, Marblehead’s boys basketball team escaped Bishop Fenwick in a “hard-fought game,” according to Marblehead coach Mike Giardi. The Magicians won the tournament championship, 55-53.

Leading the way for the Magicians was sophomore Finn Baron, who poured in 20 points. Senior captain Sam Thompson (8 points) earned himself tournament MVP after netting another eight points, while junior Finn Gallup made the all-tournament team after his “defense once again sparked,” as said by Giardi.

Marblehead bested Danvers, 54-47, earlier in the week’s tournament.

As for Fenwick, Torres led the effort with 19 points and five rebounds. Jake Bellacini did his thing with 15 points and four assists.

Beverly 77
Peabody 41

A slow start was detrimental to the Tanners, who welcomed Beverly on opening night. Peabody managed to score just five points in the second quarter, giving the Panthers a 46-16 cushion at the break. The Tanners fought back in the second half, but were too far behind in this one. Beverly’s Jacob Klass finished with a game-high 32 points, while Peabody’s leading scorer was Jariel Tolentino with 10 points. Miguel Maria added nine.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Peabody’s Aliana Ryan paced the Tanners with 13 points and six assists. Lizzie Bettencourt grabbed eight rebounds and netted 12 points. Returning starter Sophia Coburn earned her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Olivia Gaynor and Ally Bettencourt also played well, according to head coach Stan McKeen.

BOYS HOCKEY

Peabody/Saugus/Swampscott 6
Masconomet 4

With Masconomet making its way to Peabody for a Saturday evening clash at McVann-O’Keefe Rink, the Peabody/Saugus/Swampscott boys hockey team – in game No. 1 as a co-op – went home with a 6-4 win to kick off the winter. Consider Nike Muse the weekend hero. He netted four goals with two of them coming in the second period. Jake Kelley tallied a goal and an assist in his first high school game, and Dom Pappalardo made 41 saves between the pipes.

Andover 4
Bishop Fenwick 1

Fenwick’s Paul Smith netted his first varsity goal and goalie Jim Lyman delivered a 30-save performance, but that was about it against visiting Andover, which ran away with a three-goal victory on Saturday.

GIRLS HOCKEY

PLNR 4
Falmouth 0

Unfamiliar ice was no problem for the Peabody-Lynnfield-North Reading squad, which took down Falmouth by four goals on Saturday. Alyse Mutti was perfect in net – something PLNR fans have heard before – while Shirley Whitmore (2 goals), Ava Buckley, and Chloe Gromko got the job done in the scoring department.

TRACK AND FIELD

In a Northeastern Conference tri-meet at Swampscott High, the Big Blue squared off with Peabody and Salem. In both boys and girls competition, Peabody was 2-0, Swampscott 1-1, and Salem 0-2. On the boys’ side, Swampscott’s Nakeylen Davis caught eyes with a 6-0 high jump, while Peabody’s Jackson O’Brien impressed with a shot put throw of 44-7. Anthony Colella of the Big Blue won the mile with a time of 4:54.9. For the girls, Peabody’s Alessandra Forgione won the shot put with a toss of 33-9, while Swampscott’s Annabelle Averett clocked a 5:49 mile.
