An overturned 18-wheeler blocked off Route 128 Southbound coming from the Centennial Drive ramp in Peabody last Thursday morning.
Peabody police and fire departments, Massachusetts State Police, Massachusetts Department of Transportation, and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection all responded to the scene.
Officials deemed the scene a Tier 2 hazmat incident, according to Fire Chief Jay Dowling.
The truck is owned by Thermo Fisher Technologies, Inc., a biotechnology company located on Jubilee Drive, Dowling said. It was transporting sodium hydroxide, a highly corrosive substance.
Hazmat teams spent Thursday evening securing the product off the truck and to containment so that they can start the process of upturning the vehicle and towing it away. The fire department will stay on scene throughout the night to assist with the clean up, Dowling said.
The Massachusetts State Police reported on its X account, @MassStatePolice, there were no injuries.
