What a day it was for the Peabody boys and girls soccer teams, who both took care of Salem on Monday.
The girls were dominant in all phases of their game, dominating the Witches, 6-0.
Connie Patturelli led the way, scoring a brace. Avery Marcu (goal), Ally Bettencourt (goal, assist), Jess Steed (goal, assist), and Emma Wardle (goal) were fellow goal-scorers.
Gabby Gosselin recorded a pair of assists, while teammate Brooke Lomasney registered an assist in the win.
On the boys’ side, they trailed, 1-0, at halftime but regrouped and made adjustments. The Tanners came out on top, beating Salem, 3-1, after an electric second half.
The Tanners were awarded a penalty kick, which was converted by Kacper Kowalczyk to make it 1-1. Then, Owen Brennan put his mark on the action, scoring twice to put things to bed.

Peabody 0
After some early-season heroics against Danvers to kick off the fall, host Peabody fell to 1-1 in a showdown with Masconomet on Friday.
“Played very well between the 30s, but couldn’t finish on the offensive end,” said Peabody coach Stan McKeen. “We had some opportunities.”
Luke Murray was “a monster on defense,” according to McKeen, who also credited Joaquim Nunes, Omar Mishal, and Dylan Flanagan for playing strong games.

Peabody’s boys soccer team (1-0) began the fall with a bang, edging Danvers by a goal late. With just 15 minutes remaining, Osama Mishal did the honors from Luke Murray.
Danvers opened the scoring on a PK from Keegan Winterton, but Malachi Roberts equalized for the Tanners off a feed from Joaquim Nunes. Derek Collins, Jason Decost, and Owen Brennan played well for Peabody, according to McKeen.

Despite holding Danvers scoreless in the first half, the Falcons struck twice in the second to knock off Peabody in its season-opener.
According to Peabody coach Andrew Douglass, Alessandra Forgione played well between the pipes, while Ally Bettencourt and Madi Barrett were solid on defense and both Connie Patturelli and Brooke Lomasney were effective in the midfield.

The St. John’s Prep Eagles put on a show for their home faithful Friday night, flying right over Marshfield, 42-20, in Week 1. Lynn’s Edwin Castro made big play after big play, going home with two touchdowns and an interception to lead The Prep.
Freshman gunslinger Christopher Vargas tossed two touchdowns, while Deacon Robillard threw another. On the receiving end, Merrick Barlow hauled in two touchdown passes and Riley Selvais added one of his own.
The Prep hosts Londonderry at 7 p.m. next Friday.

Call it a successful debut for Peabody High coach Sherrill Erickson, whose Tanners (1-0) took down Danvers in set scores of 20-25, 25-13, 30-28, and 25-23.
“It was a great team win led by Lizzy Bettencourt and Sydney Lynch,” she said.

Despite a goal from Peabody’s Daniella White and a combined 21 saves from Sophia Kassis (15) and Ella Briggs (6), Beverly had its way on Friday. Leah Bresnahan picked up a defensive save in the first half to round out Peabody’s positives.
“The team held it to two (goals) in the first quarter, with Leah Bresnahan making her high school debut on defense and coming up big with a defensive save at a crucial moment,” said Peabody coach Jillian Tobin. “Everyone played today, including a great firecracker moment from freshman Kylee Bettencourt. The Peabody captains and seniors played with strength and drive that we have come to expect from them.”

The Eagles (1-1) earned their first regular season win of the season in a match against the Fishermen.
Jack Moriarty led The Prep with a 35 (1-under par). This was Moriarty’s second-lowest score to date in his three varsity years. He ended up under par with a birdie on hole No. 9 to wrap up his day in style.
AJ Bodnar scored a 37, while teammates Tripp Hollister, Jack Carew, Dominic Meyers, and Cole Cullen all recorded a 38.

The St. John’s Prep golf team had its moments at Brookmeadow Country Club, but fell in the season-opener to traditional rival Xaverian. Prep captain Tripp Hollister led the scoring with a 1-under par round of 35, highlighted by an eagle on the eighth hole.
