The Tanners wrapped up the 2024 season on Memorial Day with a non-conference, 9-0 win at Archbishop Williams High. The game was the fourth in as many days for the Tanners, who finished the regular season 17-3 and now await the release of the Division 1 state tournament brackets. They were scheduled to be announced Wednesday, May 29 (too late to print).
Abby Bettencourt tossed a three-hitter and struck out 11 with two walks. She also got the job done with her bat, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run, double, three RBI and three runs scored. Logan Lomasney (3-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) also homered. Lizzy Bettencourt (2-for-3, double, run) and Kiley Doolin (2-for-4, RBI, double) also had multiple-hit games. Jess Steed (1-for-2, run, RBI), Kaylee DiNicola (1-for-3, run) also had base hits.
First-year head coach Steve Lomasney said he believes the Tanners are peaking at the right time as they chase a state title.
“The state championship has been the goal since we started,” he said. “The girls have practiced with this in mind and I feel they are in a great place as a team to put a great run at it. They’ve played a number of tight, tournament-type games, which have been important for preparing to play in a state tourney. They are playing really good softball at the right time.”

Sunday morning, the visiting Tanners put on an offensive fireworks display, pounding out 16 base hits in a mercy-rule rout over Masconomet.
Lizzy Bettencourt (2-for-2, 3 runs, 3 RBI) smashed two home runs. Lomasney (3-4, 4 runs, 3 RBI, double) also homered.
Avery Grieco went the distance in the circle, allowing seven hits with nine strikeouts. She also shined at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI.
Doolin (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI, double) and Steed (2-for-4, run double) had two hits each. Abby Bettencourt (run), DiNicola (run, double, RBI), Payton Petrillo (run, RBI) and Caitlyn Burke (run, RBI) also had base hits.

Saturday, it was another game, another road rout for the Tanners. They combined for a season-high 19 base hits, four of them from Lomasney, who had a monster game and hit for the cycle with six RBI and two runs scored. Abby (3-for-5, 3 runs, 2 RBI, double) and Lizzy Bettencourt (3-for-4, run, RBI, double) had three hits each. Steed (2-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI, double), J.J. Emerson (2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Doolin (2-for-4, run, RBI, double) had two hits each. Jaslyn Iraola (run), DiNicola and Grieco had one hit each.

Friday, the visiting Tanners had the lead but couldn’t hold it, losing a walkoff in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lizzy Bettencourt was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Abby Bettencourt took the hard-luck loss in the circle.
Peabody jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Bettencourt (2-for-4, 2 runs) led off with a double and scored on Lomasney’s (1-for-4, run) RBI single. Doolin (1-for-4, RBI) made it a 2-0 game with an RBI double that plated Lomasney. The Tanners made it 3-0 with a solo run in the third. Lomasney led off with a single and scored on Lizzy Bettencourt’s single. Central Catholic knotted the game at three all with a run in the third and two more in the fourth. Peabody regained the lead in the fifth. Abby Bettencourt led off with a single, advanced to second on Lizzy Bettencourt’s single, and scored on a clutch RBI single from Grieco (1-for–4). Lizzy Bettencourt made it 5-3 when she came around to score on an infield error.
