In lucky year 13 of the Danish Cup boys lacrosse matchup between Peabody and Bishop Fenwick, the Crusaders captured their first-ever trophy with an 8-6 win Friday night.
The game was tied, 4-4, at halftime, but Fenwick escaped late courtesy of second-half goals from Anthony Sasso (2), Joey Marshall, and Aidan Bryne.
Peabody tied the game in the second half (5-5) when Donnie Cavanaugh found the back of the net, but it wasn’t enough.
Talk about close – the first half saw four ties and only one-goal leads.
For Fenwick, which can’t partake in the state tournament due to a school-wide ban from the NCAA, you could have said it was their state championship game. The Crusaders finished the spring at 12-5.
Peabody’s Johnny Lucas (2 goals) was named Team MVP for Peabody, while netminder Aiden Haight made 10 big saves. The Tanners (5-11) suffered their 11th loss.
