ROUNDUP: Girls lacrosse gets the better of Swampscott

May 7, 2024 by Joey Barrett

The Peabody girls lacrosse team (9-2) showed out on Monday with a big 10-5 win over Northeastern Conference rival Swampscott (8-2). Peabody remains undefeated in conference play at 9-0.

The Tanners were led by Brooke Lomasney (6 goals, 3 assists), Ally Bettencourt (goal, 4 assists), Madi Barrett (2 goals), Arianna Alvarado (goal), and Victoria Vaz (assist).

In goal, Caitlin Snow held firm, recording 12 saves for the Tanners.

“Addy Merrill and Maia Davis were strong on defense,” said Peabody coach Michelle Roach.

Leading the way for Swampscott was Coco Clopton, who scored four goals. Avery Laundry (goal) and Fiona Keaney (assist) chipped in on offense, while Lilah Caplan made four saves for Swampscott.

Truly, this was a collision course as both teams dominated their Thursday matchups ahead of Monday.

With Masconomet taking a trip to Peabody Thursday, it was sent home with an 18-11 defeat. Better yet, two Tanners reached milestones. Ally Bettencourt (7 goals, 4 assists) netted her 100th goal, while Brooke Lomasney (6 goals, 3 assists) snatched point No. 300.

That wasn’t all. Madi Barrett (2 assists) scored five goals, Arianna Alvarado added a helper, and the reliable Caitlin Snow made seven saves between Peabody’s pipes.

Oh, and you can make it eight wins in nine games for the Big Blue, who played true to their name in a 15-0 thrashing of the Gloucester Fishermen. Dynamic goal-scorer Avery Laundry led Swampscott with four goals and a helper.

Everyone ate in this one. Offensive production came from Coco Clopton (3 goals, assist), Sophia Ciciotti (3 goals), Chloe Puzzo (2 goals, 2 assists), Mia Leone (goal), Mia Dahlman (goal), Madeline Goldman (goal), Cecilia Tripp (assist), and Lia Beatrice (assist), while Lilah Caplan stopped all four Gloucester shots.

The Big Blue and Tanners went toe-to-toe at Peabody High School in a defensive battle. In the end, four goals were enough for Swampscott to leave Peabody with a win.

Jason Rothwell (goal, 2 assists), John Von Barts (goal), Liam Keaney (goal), and Max Field (goal) were the point-leaders for the Big Blue.

Swampscott head coach Geoff Beckett gave praise to Peabody goalie Aiden Haight for his performance.

“Peabody’s goalie was making some outstanding saves and our defense ended up playing what seemed like 20 minutes of defense in the first half,” Beckett said.

The Eagles took down the Lancers with relative ease, getting 17 goals from 13 different players. Sophomore Sam Pruell earned his first varsity win in goal to go along with two saves.

On offense, Ben Merena, Joe Bullard, Jack Quigley, and Logan Hatch all registered goals in the win.

Staples 8
St. John’s Prep 3

Staples (Westport CT) took advantage of its home turf Saturday, handing the St. John’s Prep laxmen (10-1) their first loss of the season.

“The Wreckers exposed the Eagles in all facets of the game and capitalized on numerous St. John’s mistakes throughout the contest,” said Prep coach John Pynchon.

Jake Vana led the Eagles with two goals. Josh Haarmann added another, while Madden McGowan dished out an assist and Jack Doherty won eight of 15 face-offs.

Masconomet 11
Peabody 4

Peabody was right in it on enemy turf, but six Masconomet goals in the fourth quarter broke things open. Kyle Marron kicked off the evening with a goal in the first quarter, while Aiden Haight played a strong game in Peabody’s net.

BASEBALL

Bishop Fenwick 6
Danvers 5

It’s not over until it’s over. The Bishop Fenwick Crusaders trailed 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Most teams might think it was over, but Fenwick scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to complete the comeback and shock the Falcons. Josh Scali had the game-winning hit to cap off a great night.

Xaverian 8
St. John’s Prep 3

Despite home runs from Nic Lembo and Aidan Driscoll, St. John’s Prep didn’t have enough offense to take down rival Xaverian.

Peabody 3
Swampscott 0

Call it a good old-fashioned pitchers’ duel – one won by Peabody, 3-0, over Swampscott to punch its ticket to the state tournament.

Dylan Cunningham of the Tanners picked up the win with 10 punchouts. Offensively, Cam Connolly (3 hits) and Reymi Andino (2 doubles) led the way. As for Swampscott, Nick Berube went home with three hits while Jack Spear played a strong game on the bump.

Bishop Fenwick 5
Archbishop Williams 1

Timmy Ronningen (3 K, 3 BB) gave up just five hits across 6 2/3 innings with one earned run to get the victory for the Crusaders. Chris D’Angelo went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored to help Fenwick prevail over Williams.

BOYS TENNIS

St. John’s Prep 5
BC High 0

Another match and another clean sweep for Mark Metropolis’ Eagles. St. John’s Prep remains undefeated at 7-0. In second singles Jack Prokopis beat Andrew Garafoli (6-1, 6-1), while in first singles, John DeAngelis edged his opponent, Chris Curran, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. The second doubles pairing of Mark McDuffie and Alex Melville cruised past their opponents 6-1, 6-1.

SOFTBALL

Peabody 6
Marblehead 0

It wasn’t just a no-hitter.

Peabody’s Abby Bettencourt made history Wednesday afternoon, breaking Tiana Dawe’s school record for the most career strikeouts. Bettencourt – who entered the game tied with Dawe (612) – struck out 11 Magicians to increase her total to 623.
