Roundup: An action-packed week of softball

May 1, 2024 by Joey Barrett, Anne Marie Tobin

In a tight and exciting match, the Beverly (7-0) softball team protected its home field with a 4-3 walk-off win over the fourth-ranked team in Division I, the Peabody Tanners (4-2).

Peabody struck early, scoring in the third inning with an RBI single from Lizzy Bettencourt.

Beverly responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single from Sophia Balducci. Balducci later scored on an error to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. In the fifth inning, Lizzy again brought in a run with an infield single, scoring Abby Bettencourt, with Logan Lomasney following to make it 3-2.

In the final inning, Beverly had bases loaded with zero outs. A Panther was hit by a pitch allowing the tying run to go home. Then, a few moments later, a passed ball scored the runner from third.

Beverly remains perfect in the Northeastern Conference (6-0).

Ally Bettencourt (3 goals) scored the winning tally, while teammates Madi Barrett and Brooke Lomasney (4 assists) were clinical in front of the net, scoring four goals each.
